When my family came back from Japan in 1970 and I was just turning 16, we had a National brand tempura cooker that looks like the one in this picture

It was probably the only tempura cooker in a 50-mile radius, and no restaurant served tempura. Today there are at least a dozen tempura-serving restaurants in my county, maybe 50 within an hour's drive.

I recall having a tempura Breaded Veal Cutlet in Yokohama. It was celestial!
