He never did make the connection between his illnesses and that coffee that was handed to him. It took his son to do that.
It could be, intellectualy he knew something was suspicious but he didn’t want to believe she was trying to do him in, and most of all, he didn’t want to be alone, without any woman at all.

He’s older and trusting, plus his illness could’ve been associated with something else.
