Italian beef was once Chicago’s little secret, a result of Italian immigrant innovation, this sandwich was enjoyed with pride. It was highly customizable — get sweet peppers or submerge the French roll in jus. Newer variations allow for melted cheese. The Buona chain even recently began selling a meat-free version.
But, of course, The Bear has shined a spotlight on the sandwich, and chefs around the country have started to create their own versions hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Season 2 of the FX show will move away from the sandwich and chocolate cake

I've been to the Portillo's in Orland Park at 159th & Harlem Ave, the one on Route 83 in Willowbrook and the one in Woodridge/Downers Grove. All three times, the beef sammich SUCKED. Tasted horrible, there were more sweet peppers than beef on it and the bread was terrible too.
Which Portillo's is good anymore for beef sammiches?
I do admit that I really like their chopped salads though. I typically have one of them a week.
Been to the one in Merrillville several times. They finally opened one in DeKalb years after I graduated and moved away
The chopped salad is excellent. I’d recommend the location in Glendale Heights on North Ave or the one in Bloomingdale on Lake St. My ex mother in law worked that location for 25 years. They lived next door to the Portillos in Addison. The picture of his first hot dog stand you see in every location? My ex wife’s dad built that.
When mom hit 20 years of service Dick sent her on a ten day cruise all expenses paid. Her and her best friend. Gave her $1,000 in cash to spend. When her son, my brother in law at the time, died of a heart attack Dick showed up at the wake. He handed my sister in law an envelope and told her to open it later.
When we went back to her house for the usual things we heard Julie screaming from downstairs. We all ran to see what was wrong. She just pointed to some papers on the table.
It was the deed to her house and a letter from the bank saying the mortgage was paid off.

A 2018 comment to the article: “ Portillo’s has really sunk in quality over the past year. Not just the Beefs, but in all their offerings. They do not belong on this list at all. Other than that, your list is pretty on point. I haven’t been to Novi’s in Berwyn for a long time (as suggested by the gent above) But they always had a great Beef.”
Good food fairly inexpensive
I’m sure Chicago a city I love has plenty of mom and pop joints
Oddly enough New Orleans has quite a few too given their huge old Italian Sicilian mostly influence I guess
I lived in Manhattan about 8 years as my base of global biz
Knowing Chicago like I do it might have been better
