Where to Chomp on Italian Beef Sandwiches in Chicago
Eater Chicago ^ | 10/12/22 | Kim Kovacik/Eater Chicago

Italian beef was once Chicago’s little secret, a result of Italian immigrant innovation, this sandwich was enjoyed with pride. It was highly customizable — get sweet peppers or submerge the French roll in jus. Newer variations allow for melted cheese. The Buona chain even recently began selling a meat-free version.

But, of course, The Bear has shined a spotlight on the sandwich, and chefs around the country have started to create their own versions hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Season 2 of the FX show will move away from the sandwich and chocolate cake

Real Chicago Italian Beef lovers go to Buona Beef.

The last 3 times I went there, it was sub-par.

Was in Shitcago in 2017 for a couple U2 Concerts at Soldier Field. No kidding, Soldier Field Italian Beef Sandwich was incredible. Now it wasn’t 100% traditional, but it was way better than the “highly rated” traditional Italian Beef Sandwich joint that we visited near the Airport on our way back to L.A.

And mind you this was one of the first events, if not the first, event at the Stadium that year. It was truly sad watching the Concession workers trying to fill orders let alone make cash change.

Seriously I ordered a large soft drink and the poor fellow didn’t even add ice into the cup. Had to NICELY ask him to fix that. I wanted to get out of the Stadium alive if you know what I mean, I’ll leave it at that.

Nuh-huh... Nope. The best one was on the lower Eastside of Pueblo, Colorado. It was called Grandma Lena’s house. Man that little old woman could cook and I loved it when she made this for us. That and her manicotti. Manicot, as she would say. I miss her.

Best Beef Sammich - Man-Jo-Vin’s in the Rosco Village area of Chicago(North Side). It's not bad in the new joint, it was great in the old joint.
I think they kept the old joint's grills.

They'd wrap stuff in wax paper, put it in a brown paper bag, by the time you moved to the eating station(about 5 feet away) the brown bag would be all greased up.

Roscoe Village, back in the day,(don't know when it got named Roscoe Village) was kinda shady. In the late-60’s, I lived in a housing projects just south of there(which was even shadier) and I wouldn't go into Roscoe.

now it's gentrified and as good a place to live in Chicago as any(cause not too many areas are safe any more)

It's a stop I make when I do go into that City (which is not so much anymore.)

If you are near Midway - Tony’s Italian Beef - 70th and Pulaski - small family owned place - been there since 1975 - all homemade - great food.

Portillo’s is now a Corporate Chain and is awful

I have a tangential family relationship with Dick Portillo. He’s a solid upstanding man.

And nothing has changed since he sold the place. In fact he’s still collecting rent on the properties.

A family friend works for them here in Indiana. She said it’s the best job she’s ever had.

Portillo’s, Al’s, and Johnnie’s, all great choices for Italian Beef sandwiches in Chicagoland. I went through withdrawal when I moved down to Florida 4 years ago. Florida is not known for Italian beef. And then, lo and behold, I discovered there is a Portillo’s in Brandon, located on the near outskirts of Tampa. I live about 45 minutes away from it and my nephew has moved right next to Brandon, so I will be able to once again get my fix. They sell a great slice of chocolate cake also for dessert, and their fries are really good too.

Then I just recently found out that in my town of New Port Richey (just north of Tampa and Clearwater) a new place opened about 6 or so months ago called Second City Eats, a mere couple of miles away from me that has Chicago food, including Italian Beef, Chicago deep dish pizza, all Vienna beef Chicago hot dogs, Maxwell Street Polish sausage (they used to have Maxwell Street Pork Chop sandwiches too; not sure if they still do), and Gravy Bread, plus lots more. I’m in hog heaven now knowing my fix is so close to where I live.

I never got into the Portillo’s Italian beef. I hear the quality has declined since it was sold.

Dick Portillo - Semper Fi.

I haven't seen a decrease in quality.

My daughter lives in texas and the first thing we do when their family gets off the plane here, is take them to Portillos. The main reason he sold to Berkshire was they weren't in the restaurant business.
And they were not going to mess with success.

My son is friends with a Portillo family member and went to a Portillo family member's wedding in Mexico recently. My son says the people in that family he has met,are all straight up and stand up.

I heard a rumor Dick he is back consulting?
