It could be that the clerk was still shaken up and not thinking clearly when he drove off, simply thankful to have survived that expected shoot out. This doesn’t excuse not following the correct steps, but may help explain his state of mind.

There are videos where the police let someone bleed for 15+ minutes before they render aid. Clerk just has to say I feared the perp had another gun.

Considering the excuses they make for criminal’s behavior to get them off the hook for crimes they committed, it would be great if they gave the same courtesy to the victims of the criminal’s acts when they defend themselves.
