Autophagy is the self-eating of cells. Apoptosis is the self-destruction of cells. These can be constructive and are normal processes, but you don’t want to encourage healthy cells to do this, especially in organs in which cells don’t properly renew, such as the heart or kidney.

I do not find this surprising, but it will certainly not stop me from using my Thermacell devices when camping or whatever.
They do have a warning not to use near food.
