Russia’s Wagner Group is at the forefront of the battle for Bakhmut, already notorious for its grinding brutality. Now, a UK intelligence report has revealed the methods used by the Wagner group to ensure its fighters don’t retreat from battle.

According to the report, these methods are being used against the newer recruits, most of who are untrained convicts recruited from Russia’s prisons.

The Wagner Group is using smartphones and drones to tag and track these raw fighters as they move into the battlefield. The UK intelligence report speculates that Wagner operatives who are caught trying to escape or retreat are brutally punished.

The traditional Russian method to push forward unwilling soldiers involves ‘Barrier Troops’ behind them to shoot retreaters, a practice in use since World War II.
