“been outta pocket today.”

This expression makes no sense to me. What does it mean?

“Outta pocket” is corporate-ese for “been away”.

I understand paying for something “out of pocket” (with my own funds) but I don’t get how being away is “out of pocket”. So when you are home are you “in pocket”? What “pocket”? Pants pocket, shirt pocket?
