I enjoyed rock concerts when I was ages 15 to 21, especially with all the brilliant innovation in the 60s. Then they got boring. And more boring. And all the music sounded alike and nothing ever changed.
I use Spotify to find and listen to innovative, comparatively unknown and young folk and Americana music. Often the bands have a few smaller “hits” but then their signature sound gets repetitive. But there is some amazing music that can be found.
The last concert I saw was Mannheim Steamroller. The tickets were well over $100 each and I thought I was getting the Chip Davis version of the band. Instead, it was a group of totally unrelated musicians using the Steamroller name. The musicianship was top notch but the music was so close to the recordings that they probably could have gotten away with playing one of their CDs and just pretending to play the instruments.
The Grateful Dead were one of the bands where you never knew what you would get. Every single concert has a unique setlist and they usually threw in some surprises every night, like a cover from unlikely artists as Elvis Costello or Warren Zevon. Even if they played the same song as the night before, it might be an extended 14-minute jam when the previous night it clocked in more around 6 minutes.
