There are three reasons that have been proffered for someone becoming (or choosing to be?) an incel:

1. The media has convinced them that unless they can get a woman who is exceedingly beautiful, then they would be a loser for settling for less. Better to stay single than to suffer the indignity of having an ugly girlfriend or wife.

2. No matter how wonderful (or even just acceptable) that a particular woman seems to be, eventually she will turn on the guy. She will marry him, have a baby or two, and then divorce him and take half his wealth which she'll share with her lesbian girlfriend or cougar-loving chads. Better to stay single than end up being a suckered simp. (See MGTOW)

3. Most guys are sluts. Dating apps have made it easy for the top ten percent of guys to grab all the nookie. This makes it near impossible for an average dude to get the attention of women with average, or even below average looks. If you don't have at least five of the six sixes, then you will be swiped left or else doomed to an endless series of dates going nowhere except providing an endless series of women with free meals.

Since sex is no longer about building long-term physical bonds between married men and women, or about bringing new souls into the world then trivial aspects like looks and willingness to get "freaky" will trump traditional reasons for dating and developing relationships.

Since millennials have worse job prospects, baby boomers have all the cash and prestige, and people are more materialistic in general, young women are more likely to end up with older men leaving millennial men in the lurch.

We are reaping what has been sown by decades of liberalism. The light bulb that was the Enlightenment has gone out.

Since pre history, young women have always been attracted to older men for exactly that reason.

This isn’t something new, older men have had more time to be rewarded for the risks and investments, advance in their careers etc.

The rule of 6’s is irrelevant if you have 7 figures in the bank, which sounds like a lot if you have nothing but in fact is only equivalent to $250,000 in the 80’s. (inflation ruffly halves your moneys worth every 20 years)
