Ukrainian soldiers defending the key eastern city of Bakhmut say the battles are constant and "cruel," describing ineffective Russian tactics that are endlessly repeated. They say Russian soldiers advance, Ukrainian artillery destroys them, then more come the next day. Captured Russians say their comrades face execution on desertion charges if they don't keep moving.

Update on Russian military operations in Ukraine for December 21, 2022:

- Pentagon admits Russia is gaining ground in Bakhmut; - Zelensky visit to Bakhmut mirrors similar visit to Lysychansk before it fell to Russian forces;
- Western media admits Russia has Ukraine outgunned 6 to 1 in Bakhmut;
- Claims that Russian losses are as significant as catastrophic toll Ukraine is suffering in Bakhmut does not reflect reality if Russia outguns Ukraine significantly;
- Bakhmut is a significant transportation hub and a crucial fortified position along one of Ukraine's last major defensive lines in the east;
- The fall of Bakhmut may lead to a similar breakthrough like Popasna;
- Russian forces appear interested in destroying Ukraine's military at Bakhmut more than taking the city itself;

Ukrainians have been losing hundreds of thousands of men as casualties we estimate they've had 400 000 casualties of which over 100 000 are dead. Now, very recently, Ursula Vandelion, who is the president of the European Union actually admitted that the Ukrainians had lost at least a hundred thousand dead. The truth is that over the last several months, the losses have been so heavy that we think it's probably closer now to about 120 to 125 000.

Col. Douglas Macgregor: We can account now, as I pointed out in the op-ed, for about 540 000 troops, 1500 tanks, uh another three thousand plus uh armored fighting vehicles, hundreds of guns, a thousand rocket and drone uh strike systems, uh hundreds of fixed-wing aircraft and hundreds of helicopters.

The bottom line is that the Russians are now going to war and ukrainians are frankly on the ropes. All of their sophisticated equipment, their rocket artillery systems, what few they have left, are operated now by Americans and British contractors. They don't hav

So Ukraine is really in a lot of trouble and that's why Zelensky is working very very hard to convince everybody that we should give our last full measure for Ukraine, but it's not going to work and Ukraine is going to be destroyed and as we've seen from the new missile strikes the energy grid is almost completely gone, electricity is almost totally absent, water, food all the amenities that make life bearable are missing, and billions of uUkrainians are now leaving Ukraine because they cannot live where they are.

“Sounds like they are using Russian convicts to attack Ukrainian positions.”

Probably true.

“In order to drive the Russian inmates into attacks in the Bakhmut direction, various methods are used, in particular, barrier troops and lack of food

Andrii Illienko, an officer of the Freedom Battalion, said this on Espreso TV.

He emphasized that inmates from Russian prisons near Bakhmut understand that they are cannon fodder.”

AFU loses over 250 officers in a month in Bakhmut due to NATO tactics: details

There has been an explosive increase in the deaths of junior and senior officers in AFU units deployed to Bakhmut since late November.

According to the Military Chronicle, the largest losses among platoon and company commanders have been recorded in the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade, 60th Infantry Brigade, 46th Airmobile Brigade, and 59th Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian Army, which arrived in Bakhmut to reinforce the defense and strengthen the front.

These units are considered the most combat-ready in the Ukrainian army. Officers and privates from these brigades were trained at the Yavoriv training ground and in Germany as part of the JMTG-U mission before starting the special military operation. The training was conducted by officers from US Army and National Guard formations and instructors from a number of NATO countries.

The US instructors taught the Ukrainian Armed Forces about long-range combat and how to operate in an assault formation in a city. In Bakhmut, it is practically impossible to conduct attacks 95% of the time it takes to organize defenses. The Ukrainian army cannot offer its own tactical solutions, and as a result, unit commanders make mistakes and send people to certain death.

Due to a wrong assessment of the potential enemy, in less than a month, the losses of officers in all units of the Ukrainian army in Bakhmut exceeded 250 people. Because of tactical errors, units trained to NATO standards in Germany were repeatedly ambushed and tried to take cover in buildings previously sheltered by the 152 mm Giatsint-S and Msta-B guns.

I think the ZOMBIE nomenclature is absolutely appropriate.

Freezing, starving, untrained, cut off from superiors - only told they must walk into the death of Ukrainian artillery blasts while firing their WWII era weapons or suffer being machine gunned from behind - wouldn’t you be walking like a zombie then?

Baker made that "not one inch" statement several times during the negotiations concerning the status of a reunified Germany. It was clearly regarding the negotiated status of East and West Germany. In fact, the last time Baker said it was in the form of a question, directly to Gorbachev:

"Would you prefer to see a united Germany outside of NATO, independent and with no U.S. forces or would you prefer a unified Germany to be tied to NATO, with assurances that NATO’s jurisdiction would not shift one inch eastward from its present position? He (Gorbachev) answered that the Soviet leadership was giving real thought to all such options

Gorbechev himself confirmed this:

“The topic of ‘NATO expansion’ was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. … Another issue we brought up was discussed: making sure that NATO’s military structures would not advance and that additional armed forces would not be deployed on the territory of the then-GDR after German reunification. Baker’s statement was made in that context… Everything that could have been and needed to be done to solidify that political obligation was done. And fulfilled.” Gorbachev continued that “The agreement on a final settlement with Germany said that no new military structures would be created in the eastern part of the country; no additional troops would be deployed; no weapons of mass destruction would be placed there. It has been obeyed all these years.”

Gorbachev continued that “The agreement on a final settlement with Germany said that no new military structures would be created in the eastern part of the country; no additional troops would be deployed; no weapons of mass destruction would be placed there. It has been obeyed all these years.”

People have argued otherwise, but both President Gorbechev, and his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eduard Shevardnadze, have been clear they were not lied to. Both were critical of NATO expansion, but clear on exactly what they were negotiating. Ironically, Shevarednadze became President of Georgia and led his country to join the Council of Europe in 1999 and declared its intention to join NATO in 2002, which brought about Russia's invasion in 2008.

They’re feeling extra cocky because their heroes Biden and Pelosi have been peeing themselves, gushing and drooling all over Zelensky as they offer the little grifter more of our money.

The map of NATO’s “expansion” to the East you posted misses an important point.
Those eastern European countries became NATO members only after being brutally OCCUPIED by the Soviet Union - for decades!
Evidently when Russia lost the Cold War and finally withdrew from its previously colonized eastern EU countries - Eastern Europe ASKED to be protected by NATO - in case Russia had the intention to invade again...
As we all see ... If Ukraine had been in NATO it wouldn’t have been invaded today!
The NATO expansion to the East is not a choice by NATO. It was those Eastern countries who demanded that - in order to repel any renewed Russian aggression.
You failed to mention this, and it changes the whole perspective.
