If you could be truly great in one sport? Golf. You can play it your entire life. You’re famous to those few that follow the sport, but not getting mobbed constantly as it is a niche game. That niche is a very wealthy demographic so great for advertising money. You aren’t risking brain injury or your life. You don’t age out at 35. No other sport checks all the boxes.

Golf and tennis are the games for life.

I am a terrible golfer, but I still really enjoy playing and yes, even watching, especially the major tournaments.

He’s still playing for the Uruguayan national team. They were eliminated in the opening round.

Tell that to Jimmy Connors. The knees go by 40 and, yes, you can still play but not like golf. Too much wear and tear.

Tennis is a good pick though because most people wouldn’t know 7 or 8 of the top 10 players in the world if they walked in the room. It has a wealthy niche audience and excellent endorsement cash flow. Who watches Wimbledon? 3% of the population? 1%? But they can run Mercedes ads etc and still do well because of the demographics.

Worst is football. 3 year careers. More than half are bankrupt within 10 years. Lifetime of brain damage and limping. If you look at the teams, 95% of active defensive players are now black. No cries for diversity?

As I said, of all the sports golf is the most lucrative, safest, less likely to be hassled, and can play forever.

Yes, if you're good enough, there's a lot of money to be made hitting that little white ball. About two hundred players make a very good living from golf; about fifty players make an extremely good living from golf, and maybe ten or twenty are billionaires from golf. And if you're good enough (again) you can transition to the Senior (uh... Champions) Tour and keep winning money into your sixties (a la Bernhard Langer...).

Yes, but even an average high school female golfer = college scholarship. Lessons are expensive but have paid off for a number of parents I know.

Oh, and what’s with the ‘soccer is boring’ b.s. “The rest of the planet likes something I don’t. They’re all wrong!” It’s a sport. Sports are entertainment - unless you’re a participate then it may be exercise or a career opportunity.

Not everyone likes the things you like. Watch what you want to watch. It’s just your opinion. Billions of people disagree with you. I try to find things to appreciate in all sports.

But that was a great World Cup final game. A group of us enjoyed it at a restaurant/bar.

Agreed. If you want to watch and root, do so. No one is forcing it on anyone.

My secret hope is that someday we - the US - win the World Cup. And a couple hundred million Americans will shrug and say Huh?

Where has he played besides Spain in La Liga and France in League 1. Neither of which claim to be two of your tougher leagues.

While France's Ligue 1 is basically a farmer's league, La Liga in Spain is definitely a top 2 or 3 league in the world. In Messi's prime, Spanish teams (Barcelona and Real Madrid) won 7 of 10 Champions League Finals (Messi winning four). La Liga is much tougher than the Bundesliga in Germany, where Bayern Munich mostly dominates minnows. I'd like to have seen him play in Italy (he is ethnically largely Italian), but La Liga is a top league.

La Liga is one of the top five leagues yet it is no where as physical as the EPL. When it comes to physicality it ranks below the EPL, Serie A and the Bundesliga.
