Shell your neighbors is a passion thing, because you're afraid that they'll be used as a pretext by Russia, the huge behemoth to the East, to invade. And that's exactly what happened. Stupid, self-fulfilling prophecy, yes. Barbaric, yes. Nazi, no. Especially since the fighting and atrocities were mutual.
