The CSA was the second most powerful army in the word. Right behind the USA. Europe armies were small in the 19th century. They sent reporters to cover the US civil war and they were mesmerized following the scope of the worlds first modern war.
Europeans rapidly came to the conclusion that American military might during the Civil War far outclassed their own. Even divided, either the US or the CSA would have crushed any European attempt to conquer them.
