Re: "Detectives learned no Social Security number was ever issued for Joseph."

I do not recall newborns getting a Social Security number in 1953.

Is that correct?

I did not get a Social Security card (and number?) until I started my first job.

I was born in 1954 and we did not apply for SS card until we were 16 at that time we were allowed to start working at 16!,,

You’re right about the step-dad. An unrelated adult male in a household is, statistically, a risk factor for the children. But it doesn’t sound like it was physical violence. The kid was severely undernourished. Mom had to have been complicit with that. Maybe the poor kid was starving and the step-dad landed a fatal blow.

What is rotten is the woman who kidnapped her and raised her cannot be charged because the statute of limitation has expired.

I think the woman who was kidnapped should have her biological brothers make a visit to her fake mom.
What is doubly rotten the kidnapped girl/woman said she never had any love from her fake mom and knew something was amiss and her fake dad sexually abused her for many years.
Woman had it rough I tell ya.

Similar story, born in 1954, got an SSN when I was 12 and needed a passport to move to Japan with my DOD parents.

I wonder if the “journalist” who wrote this even knows that issuance of SS numbers to newborns is a relatively recent thing

My initial reaction too. Trying to recall my age when I got my SS card. I signed it with a childish handwriting.

Born mid-50’s. I remember I needed my SS# to start a savings account at the S&L in our county seat. My father didn’t have it or the information so I had to wait.

All my siblings except one got them at the same time. We all have consecutive numbers. But not according to age; just randomly distributed amongst the siblings.

I heard a podcast episode on this case .... so sad, poor little guy. Death may have been a blessed relief from what was being done to him (emaciated, beaten severely), but he certainly deserved to live and in decent circumstances. He has his name back, finally. I hope there will be justice.

Unlikely. Modern journalists are supremely ignorant and possess room temperature IQs.

There was a similar case in Chicago a couple decades ago, with the body of child found buried in a narrow gangway between two apartment buildings. The detectives tracked down the family based on old-fashioned detective work, interviewing everyone that lived in the buildings until someone remembered a family with children who kept to themselves and didn’t appear to attend school. Eventually they tracked down one of the parents and some surviving siblings who were living out of state and the siblings talked and confirmed that the parents were abusive and covered up the death. But the surviving parent was a terminal cancer patient with months to live, so they were never charged.

“Both parents are dead, he said.”

So releasing the names probably won’t do anything but help people figure out who the siblings are which opens them up to harassment. So it seems sensible to me in this circumstance.

“Before that parents could apply for a social security number for their children.”

They could, but at that time, most people didn’t apply for one until they needed to get a job, so probably not until around high school age.

I was born in 1955, and my dad got SS cards for all 6 of the kids in about 1962 or 1963. I started work outside our home at age 7, picking berries, but we got paid in cash when we brought the picked berries to the collection point in the field. My first job that was paid via paycheck was at 16.

... He has no sadness now as it is safe to say he is now at peace with the Lord.

That is the only thing a person can bear thinking when something like this comes up.

Thanks for the reminder.
