Catholicism doesn't say the Bible ended at Patmos. The Bible's lessons and metaphors are timeless. They apply to all eras.

And I don't see what this has to do with socialism or economic policy.

It has to do with socialism and the social gospel, because those movements are about self-salvation. If we are on this dirty snowball of a planet and Christ is not coming, then we have to provide our own salvation. That is what socialism is really all about.
