The start of a Steven King novel...
Your remark made me think of an old Stephen King short story from his “Night Shift” book. In the story, a group of teenage kids swam out to a floating platform in the middle of a large lake. Then they discovered that a large, blob-like creature was lurking under the platform, waiting to gobble up any kid who dared to swim back to shore.
