A mass migration of sea lions is making a splash, with hundreds taking over the sandy shores of a Ventura County beach.
Experts say sea lions have historically been a part of Silver Strand Beach but in recent years, many more have made their way over, a migration that’s mostly caused by human influences.
Many sea lions can be seen relaxing and sunbathing on the sands of Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard.
“This is their place,” Connie Korenstein, a Silver Strand resident, tells KTLA’s John Fenoglio. “I feel honored that they’ve chosen to be here.”
Just a few months ago, hundreds of mostly young sea lions started moving in, nestling into their new home on the shore.
Westin visits his grandmother who lives in the area and they would typically go swimming together in the beach before the recent influx of sea lions moved in.
When asked what the area now smells like, Westin said, “It kind of smells like poop.”
Other residents though, aren’t really bothered by the scent.
“I mean that’s how they smell,” said an Oxnard man named Bruce.

Oxnard, where the Section 8 slum meets the sea. Oxnard is a Native Californian word meaning smell of ox. (jk) Long ago they considered a name change to Mandalay Beach, but the minority voters were too busy being poor.
Just have the local health officials declare a lockdown and require the beach off limits to all genders of (two, four and no legged creatures) because of COVID.
I’ve seen them at Sea World. Quite fascinating how rapidly they can change direction.
Penguins are just as acrobatic (hydrobatic?) in the water.
Henry T. Oxnard’s last name is Old English for “ox-herd(er)”, FWICS and JFTR.
From what I see in the article, the summer breeze in Oxnard won’t make you feel fine . . .
“Sniff. Whew! That ain’t jasmine”
Ha! Thank you both for the humor and the trip through memory lane.
With all that pollution, I’d be on the beach as well.
You can go into the water in S-CA, and taste what ya had for dinner the night before...
The beaches near us have good water quality (Torrance, Redondo). Oh, wait, what am I saying? No, I’m sorry, bad water, no parking, unscenic. Really, find other beaches. Forget what I said at first…
Wondering how long that reference would take to show up.

California male sea lions average 660 pounds.
Hundreds of them?
That beach is going to smell like a backed up toilet for the next year!

Wealthy Environmentalist 1998: Oh, they’re sooo cute, we gotta save them from evil commercial fishermen that kill them, we gotta impose fines over $200K, take their catches, boats, and throw them into prison for 10 years! Its for the Children!!
Wealthy Environmentalist 2022: Hey! What are all this stinking Sea Lions doing on my boat pier, and they are all over my beach front property!! Somebody do something! Pass a law or something, this has gotta stop!!
You forgot, bad water, no parking, unscenic, homeless, illegal aliens and criminals everywhere. Btw, Redondo was nice in the 60s...Torrance? Ferrget about it...
The South Bay beaches are lovely. The dolphins play, and this time of year, you can even spot whales.
Been there done that until those venues, and most of the people there, became quite unbearable. Have fun!☺
Ah... not sea lions but overweight women : )
