I was watching an old episode of ‘Adam 12’ where Reed and Malloy were answering a call about a distraught woman waving a gun. They arrived on-scene, stayed behind their cruiser, and talked the woman into dropping the gun. Nobody shot anybody.
Yeah, I know it’s just a pretend TV show. But it displayed solid and calm police work. I guess those days are gone, if they ever existed in the first place.
Cars do not provide protection from many modern day rounds. It mind as well be paper.
In the mid-70s a good buddy was on a rather large metro area police force.
Being young and idealistic, in addition to watching pap like Adam-12, I asked how many warning shots he was supposed to fire in an armed encounter.
He said if they even think you have a gun they have the right to blow you out of your socks, no warning.
Oddly I don’t think that’s the country the Patriots were fighting for, but it’s where we are.
“if they ever existed in the first place.”
They did indeed exist at one time.
I think at one time police academies used Adam -12 episodes as training films.
The perp gets a vote on how the encounter gets resolved.
Sometimes the perp wants to live, sometimes they don’t.
