China censors maskless crowd footage in World Cup broadcasts

Chinese state television has censored World Cup games to remove shots of maskless crowds after the sight of joyous fans celebrating in packed stadiums stoked anger back home, where hundreds of millions remain under strict pandemic restrictions.

A well-attended opening ceremony in Qatar – with no social distancing – led to users of Chinese social media platforms complaining that it contrasted with the severe isolation they felt under President Xi Jinping’s zero-Covid policy.

Chinese netizens said it was “weird” to see hundreds of thousands of people gathering in a carnival-like atmosphere while they were still forced to live under a draconian system that most other countries have long abandoned.

Mark Dreyer, who runs the China Sports Insider blog, noticed that games broadcast on the state-owned channel, China Central Television (CCTV), were being edited to avoid live shots of cheering crowds and instead show closeups of the players and coaches. “Of course, there are going to be times when you still see crowd shots – wider shots, after some goals when a cutaway shot would be too jarring etc,” Dreyer wrote on Twitter. “But there is clear reduction.”

Chinese have been told the world is dying of covid and only Chicoms and Xi Jinping’s Zero Covid Policy has kept China safe, whereas the rest of the world is dying.

Their media is so controlled they don’t know what BS that is.

Until they saw the World Cup, the crowds, together, no masks, no problem, no fear of Covid etc…

They saw the lie.

Xi has lost the “Mandate of Heaven”.

“The ancient god or divine force known as Heaven or Sky had selected this particular individual to rule on its behalf on earth. An important element of the mandate was that although the ruler had been given great power he also had a moral obligation to use it for the good of his people, if he did not then his state would suffer terrible disasters and he would lose the right to govern.”

“ Xi has lost the “Mandate of Heaven”.”

Yes, but Xi never really had it.

Mao had it. Hua Guofeng did not.

Deng did.

Jiang and Hu did not, but had an authority bestowed by Deng.

After them, it’s open season.

Xi is trying to get it, but failing.

Somebody said that Communist regimes last for at most around 75 years (three generations). Russia did, and that would put China on line to replace the system in this decade and Cuba in the next.

But I’m more skeptical. The Soviet Union collapsed because it couldn’t provide the consumer goods people craved. China doesn’t have that problem. Russians turned out to be more Western than the Communists assumed. China may not have that problem either.

And after, our government lost the “Mandate of Heaven” at some point and it’s still around.

Can’t let the citizens peer over the Great Wall that’s been built to keep them in.
