How do you get more authoritarian than constant electronic tracking of every citizen? Permission to move tied to every detail of a person's housing, living, food, and health care? A totally controlled media? Covid concentration camps?
Yet I think the CCP may still find another level.

What they have done in the past is simply let a lot of the protests go on and then identify the leaders and grab them while they are at home.
They simply disappear.
If the protest leaders run, the government will take their families. Dont show up? Fine, then your parents go first, then your siblings and the last will be your girlfriend/wife and kids.
You become a leader in protests against the Chinese communists you better be prepared to watch all your relatives disappear.
Thing is he’d have to clamp down on every city, every town, every village every university. He might try, but it would not work - too many people, too spread out across a county the size of the US.
Look for a new supply of organs to become available to those who can afford them.

Protesting is of negative impact unless you are willing to push it to the end, like in SriLanka. The Yello0wJackets in France accomplished nothing. Truckers in Canada, ditto. Every US one so far, the same. Unless you force the Aholes out of their castle, it only gets worse. Just “protesting” is just racking time on TV.
Writer is an idiot. Not because he’s wrong that this could usher in a more draconian rule - it could. And it might do the opposite, too.
He’s an idiot because he writes “as cases hit record highs ” as if there actually is a Covid problem.
