My neighbor (age 50) was on a ventilator for months in the hospital with COVID. He wasn’t expected to survive but did -came home, family had a huge homecoming for him.
A month later he dropped dead in the bathroom.
He had a 5% chance of coming off the ventilator to begin with. He only had a 30% chance of surviving the first year after being on the ventilator so it’s not surprising.
