NASA loses contact with Artemis 1's Orion spacecraft for 47 minutes

NASA unexpectedly lost contact with its moonbound Orion capsule early Wednesday morning (Nov. 23), for reasons that remain unclear.

Mission controllers lost communication with Orion at 1:09 a.m. EST (0609 GMT) while reconfiguring a link between the capsule and the Deep Space Network, the set of radio dishes that NASA uses to talk to its farflung spacecraft.

Orion is gearing up for a crucial maneuver: It's scheduled to perform an engine burn on Friday (Nov. 25) that will insert the capsule into orbit around the moon. If all goes well, Orion will stay in that orbit for about a week, then head back toward Earth on Dec. 1.

NASA in the 60s and 70s employed smarter people.

Yep. And with slide rulers.

Elon Musk is so far ahead of NASA. I'm still wondering why none of the geniouses at NASA thought of turning a booster rock around and landing back to be re-used.

The real purpose of NASA is to make money for politically connected contractors.

That's why the Biden Administration is stalling Musk's Starship rocket with endless "environmental impact" studies. Allowing him to accomplish things at a fraction of the budget would expose the scam.

Why is the US spending billions on NASA to orbit a satellite around the Moon? What's the point when we already had live Astronauts radioing from the Moon decades ago?

This program seems to exist for the sole purpose of adding women and minorities to the list of Americans who've walked on the moon. Equity, or whatever.

Ten bucks says they plant the "pride" flag up there.

I hadn't read or heard that. I'll take your word for it since every Fedgov program is politically influenced and doomed to economic failure. Yet Musk still manages to create reusable booster rockets that can reverse course and land on a floating platform. Why didn't all the genious at NASA think of that? Simple...stuck in their Fedgov box.

Musk may be a little odd, but he has vision way beyond NASA, even though he got some help from NASA with his SpaceX enterprise. I doubt it was much.

I just read NASA is having a problem with RF comms of some space vehicle that's supposed to orbit the Moon. Sheesh, we had RF comms with the Astronauts from the Moon decades ago. What's the point of this mission that is not working out? NASA is so myopic in their thinking.

Musk is looking at affordable commercial space flights and his engineers are looking at Mars. Sheesh, shut down NASA and its waste of billions. Let Musk, Boeing, and Bezo do their thing. Free enterprise will show the Fedgov how it's done.

That’s because back then they did their computations with pencils and slide rules rather than phones.

I wonder how far up the food chain the scary news made it in 47 minutes. Were the engineers in the control room getting unhelpful panicked phone calls from bureaucrats and political aides? I hope not but I have no faith.

Geezy—Is the Orion carrying ballots?

Actually, the real Orion project was canceled in 1964. Else we would have been to every planet in our solar system and several interstellar ships with crews in the thousands would be returning, while more are being launched to more distant stars - including the Orion Nebula.

But hey, can’t let the peons get too far away from immediate political control.
