“Tipping went to 15%, and now 20%?” I still tip 15%. Good waiters never have to worry about tips.
When you go places without tipping, the service blows. The UK pre-tipping is a good example.
Not sure I have ever given a 20 pct tip. I don’t feel compelled by these arbitrary societal rules. I will round up tips close to 15 pct out of habit.
I also don’t feel all this compassion for waiters. If they want more money get a real job.
The places that tick me off are the ones where I order from a counter person, pick up my own food, and clean up my own table.
Why do I need to tip at a place like that? (Think Five Guys, Smashburger, etc.).
It seems to go just fine at Blaze (my favorite at the moment), Five Guys (too expensive to go back to), etc. Everywhere I’ve been in recent months with fixed tips had horrible food and service.
“20%? I thought it was 15%. Oh well, I see no reason to change it”
I keep it simple, I double the amount of the sales tax. If the staff isn’t happy with 16% tough $hit.
I would be in favor of abandoning tipping, but some of the things it might lead to could be undesirable. Without tipping many restaurant owners would end up with the less desirable waitresses & servers or would have to pay real wages to get the good ones. If they paid more to get the good ones, I think it’s possible their businesses would suffer because of the prices they would feel obligated to charge. Then I guess some might have to go “cafeteria style” to maintain business, which wouldn’t be all bad.
Not understanding what was said about Five Guys. The one I went to was basically self-service. No tips there that I knew about or paid any attention to at least.
I try to be generous while tipping at restaurants because the waiters and waitresses are usually paid substantially less than the other workers. It’s a stupid law, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon. As for the tip jars in coffee shops where they’re already making a decent wage, I pass.
Anyone whose job is not stolen by illegal aliens should be happy with what they’re getting. I don’t have a sales tax here. I just move the decimal point one digit over and add a few bucks depending on how generous I’m feeling or if the service was good. There are some spots I will never return to because the service was crap and I don’t know what they’ll put in my food next time if they recognize me.
Eliminate tips……..and have no service whatsoever. I bet half of normal sit down restaurants would convert to just serving from to cash register.
Not true, restaurants would still serve people, they would just have to pay their service staff
You wouldn’t eat there. The food will be overpriced and the service will suck.
No, I’ve traveled to 50 countries, many with no tipping. I’m sure I will be perfectly fine. Places with bad food and bad service will still have bad food and bad service. Those with good food and service will still have it. And those that fail, well, well if they cannot figure out like other companies how to give good food and service, they deserve to fail.
Want to guarantee a phlem spread on your sandwich? The fast food places where you pay ahead and gets the tip before or while the food is prepared and you don’t tip or tip too little.
