Grandfather of Oklahoma Teen Killed by Homeowner in Burglary Says AR-15 Made for ‘Unfair’ Fight

Three Oklahoma teenagers were killed when they broke into a house and were met by a homeowner with an AR-15. Now the grandfather of one of the teenagers is speaking out about his grandson’s death.

According to KTUL-TV, Leroy Schumacher, grandfather of 17-year-old Jacob Redfearn, believes the death of Redfearn was unjustified because the homeowner’s AR-15 gave him an unfair advantage over the three burglars.

Speaking to KTUL, Schumacher acknowledged that breaking into a house was “stupid,” but death was not the appropriate consequence.

“What these three boys did was stupid,” Schumacher said. “They knew they could be punished for it but they did not deserve to die.”

“Brass knuckles against an AR-15? C’mon. Who was afraid for their life?” Schumacher said.

The homeowner who pulled the trigger has not been charged with any crimes because police say he acted in self-defense. But Schumacher reinterated his belief that the consequences literally did not fit the crime.

“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them — there was no need for that,” he told KTUL.

In addition to Redfearn, 19-year old Maxwell Cook and 16-year old Jake Woodruff were also shot and killed in the home invasion. Getaway driver, 21-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez, was not injured but later arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree burglary.

Police also say Rodriguez admitted to planning the burglary.

More from CNN:

Rodriguez went to police in Broken Arrow, a Tulsa suburb, and told them she was involved. Oklahoma state law says that first-degree murder occurs if “any other person takes the life of a human being during … first degree burglary.” Another condition is if a person causes the death of another person with “malice aforethought.”

In the end, Schumacher said he supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms but doesn’t agree with killing home invaders.

“These boys’ families are going to suffer with this the rest of their lives, we have to live with this the rest of our lives,” he said. “You can’t change history, but you can damn sure learn from it, and maybe some kids will learn from this.”

Yep, totally unfair that someone protects their home, family and property. Oh those poor criminal families will never recover from their loss, nevermind the mental stress the true victim will have to live with. As a gun owner, CCW Permit holder, NRA and local county approved firearm safety trainer, the last thing I ever want is to have to draw a firearm in defense and take a life, no matter the circumstances. I cannot imagine what hell the true victims life will be in the future.

"What a shame that these young criminals will not be able to be a burden on society for the next several decades."

The courthouse crowd has lost millions maybe even Billions in taxpayer money over this. Why luxury cars, boats and second/third houses won't be sold, so it's a drag on their economy.

A. This was years ago and I don’t know why it’s posted now. B. It’s Oklahoma. If it’s a justified shooting which, it was, the law forbids any retaliatory/civil lawsuit.

Story is from March, 2017.

I like footnote to the original KTUL story:

EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story reported a vigil was planned for Friday night at Owasso's YMCA, according to Owasso Public Schools' superintendent, but the YMCA says no vigil is planned at their organization.

Gee, I wonder where that misconception could have come from.

No FReepers are that stupid, cuz we all know that if the perpetrators were black the article would have accused the homeowner of being racist.

They knew they could be punished and they were, indeed, punished.

Funny, I’m sitting in my house minding my own biz, not looking for a fair or unfair fight.

But if you ever find yourself in a fair fight, it’s because your tactics suck. I never plan to fight fair, especially in my own house.

Someone breaks into my home, I’m not looking for a fair fight. I’m just looking to survive.

The only thing wrong is the homeowner didn’t waste the occupants of the car as well

“Speaking to KTUL, Schumacher acknowledged that breaking into a house was “stupid,” but death was not the appropriate consequence.”

He’s right, as I think most would agree that the death penalty is a bit too much for breaking into a house, and so the law doesn’t provide for it. Unfortunately, though, you don’t always make it to the court room if you break into a house...and he didn’t.

The parents of these three boys share a lot of responsibility for what they did. Where was their religious upbringing and moral understanding that led to their actions?

My choice inside my house would be my 5 round 12 ga. shotgun. Lotsa unfairness. Hopefully my hearing would survive...

The grandfather did society a huge favor. His efficiency is the only real deterrent, unless criminals believe every household has an AR-15 with someone who knows how to use the tool(s). THAT could deter some criminal deeds. Had the teens known the resident had and knew how to use an AR-15, perhaps the fools would have stepped away from the crime future. Threat of being terminated abruptly does deter some criminal deeds.

Now that's an idea, put an AR-15 in every home that wqwnts one and give training on how to use it efficiently. Think about it, would criminals prey on combat trained service personnel who are likely to be well armed?... Not if they know someone will terminate them for trying!

What is unfair is for the brothel media to be publicizing the reactions of bereaved relatives in the aftermath of their loss. What the grandfather said about “a fair fight’ was stupid but then he just lost a grandson. I wish the media would let people work out their grief in privacy.
