Actually, the town of Oak Bluffs has been a popular resort location for Blacks since the 19th Century. President Grant watched the Centennial Fourth of July fireworks display in 1876 from a rooftop porch on a house in Oak Bluffs, in fact the porch I watched the fireworks from in 1997.

Martha Vineyards was a Quaker settlement in the Nineteenth Century and welcomed all. Perhaps ironically, there is a memorial to the Confederate Soldier in Oak Bluffs, erected by a former Confederate Army Major, with the inscription, "Brothers Once Again".
