After a series of battlefield defeats, Russia is aiming punishing missile strikes at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that could leave millions of civilians exposed to the winter cold. Pentagon officials said Moscow hopes to exhaust Ukraine’s missile defenses, and buy time to reset its forces. At a security forum in Canada Saturday, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has offered a preview of “a possible world of tyranny and turmoil.” Austin’s remarks were some of his strongest to date on the importance to the international community of helping Kyiv prevail after nearly nine months of war, and they were delivered at what may be an inflection point in the conflict.

Kherson residents have been queuing for two hours to shop at the first Ukrainian supermarket as it opens after months of Russian occupation. The city of Kherson has been freed by Russian control last week, after enemy troops fled and Ukrainian troops were welcomed back to the region. A resident said they “need a bit of everything”, after shops were damaged and destroyed in the conflict and was pleasantly surprised by the low prices offered by the supermarket.

I saw an interesting TV show about people living in a cold rural area. In winter they would sleep in a small room with their cows and sheep and enjoy the warmth. I wonder how many Ukranians live where they could utilize such a resource?
