I went on liberty once in Portsmouth, England, and as soon as I stepped off the ship, a really nice looking gal started talking to me, and next thing I knew we were going to some dance somewhere. When we got there, it cost something like five dollars a person to get in, and to someone who was making $5000 a year, that was significant.
Well, as soon as we got inside, she was gone. I looked around for her, but there were a lot of people and I just couldn’t find her. I left after about an hour, and as I was walking out, I saw her walking in with another sailor, who was buying tickets to get both of them in!
As compliant as I was, that gal could have just walked me into a dark alley where a couple of her male accomplices were waiting.
