I agree with equal pay for equal play. However, let’s see the Ladies do Mavericks.
Don’t the number of genders increase every day? Some day everyone will have their own gender.
However having surfed for years and now, in my dotage, watch a few WSL events online. Women surfers do not have the power men have.
I've seen a few take on Mavericks and Peahai. Damned brave of them considering the difference in physical strength vs men. Even in smaller waves, their cut backs and power in bottom turns just don't compare to men. It's just different.
Worth a pay difference? I don't know. They are out there going for it and I'm not. I'll give them that.
As a male surfer, even i don’t tangle with Mavericks!
Jack ONeill was a regular at our grocery (Shoppers Corner) back in the day.it’s why I always respect the locals at Santa Cruz - a lot of great surfers. The cold water builds character
I've noticed that no women wants to take on Nazare, Portugal...the biggest wave in the world. The men surfers have got to have a death wish to take on that monster. You think Mavericks and Waimea are big, they are shore break compared to Nazare.
It’s going to be hard to have a contest if the number of genders grows faster than the organizers can add categories.
Current or past surfer? I didn't even know about Mavericks until after I stopped surfing (Huntington Beach pier). Check out Nazare, Portugal. It would scare me to death just being on a jet ski rescue sled.
The best woman surfer is the one that surfs like a man.
I call dibs: sex male, chromosomes, XY, gender male, cis, hetrosexual.
Beg to differ. Wikipedia's article on the Nazare Canyon has this:
"On February 11, 2020, at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal, Maya Gabeira broke the record for the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman on a record-setting wave measuring 73.5 feet (22.4 meters), besting her own previous world record of 68 feet. The 73.5-foot wave she surfed on February 11 in Nazaré was the largest wave surfed by anyone that year, earning Gabeira the WSL’s 2020 women’s XXL Biggest Wave Award. By contrast, that year’s men’s XXL Biggest Wave Award winner, Kai Lenny, rode a 70-foot wave."
Definitely not a woman to tangle with, if she doesn't fancy you. She's single...
See comments just above about Maya Gabeira.
I can't speak to whether she surfs like a man. Gotta find some YouTube vids of her. I bet they're amazing.
