A maths teacher and boarding school housemaster has been struck off for life for having sex with a former female pupil after 'grooming' her for a sexual relationship while she was at school.
James Wooldridge, 56, who was head of maths at co-ed boarding school Eastbourne College, 'used his professional position... to further a future sexual relationship' with the pupil, a teaching misconduct panel found.
He had sexual intercourse with her in 2013 - when she was no longer a pupil at the £41,160-a-year Eastbourne College in East Sussex - after they had been inappropriately texting and communicating since 2010 - when she was a pupil.
Notable former pupils of more than 150-year-old boarding school include comedian Eddie Izzard and actor Hugh Skinner from W1A, Les Misérables and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Wooldridge remained in post until September 2019, after the pupil gave a letter to the headmaster in May 2019, saying she had been groomed by Wooldridge for the purpose of a sexual relationship after the age of 18.
She said she felt manipulated by her former teacher but had not been able to speak out before.
Eastbourne College bosses had warned Wooldridge multiple times not to communicate with the girl since 2010, after he sent her text messages before he had sex with her in 2013.
He drove 'Pupil A' to his home in February 2012, gave her a tour and showed her photos of her which he had downloaded from Facebook before driving her back to school and instructing her to remain silent about the day.
In that month he also invited her to attend a family skiing holiday and on Valentine's Day he gifted her a personalised 'fancy, lovey-dovey cupcake' with a personalised message - which appears to be an inside reference.

And that’s all it took. So even as an adult a woman can claim to be a victim and the man is automatically guilty.
Eh...if he didn’t touch her until she’s 18 and out of his authority thats a bit different from molesting Dora the explorer. If the sexes were reversed people would be cheering.
She was no longer a pupil and not under 18. In the future what man will be safe? Are my girlfriends from when we were in elementary going to come after me for kissing them behind the school?
I bet she was hot
Only if you run as a republican and make a good showing in the primaries.
Yep, it’s BS. I don’t recommend 56 y/o men sleeping with 18 y/o girls, but it’s legal.
He was 46 at the time. But still not kosher.
I’m right around there, and wouldn’t go below 28.
Prefer early 30’s. If you want kids, older could be and issue.

He broke the school’s policy and what was in the contract.
I kinda agree that yes she was 18 but it would seem he was caught grooming her while she was at the school so I can see where parents would be upset. He was there to teach math and not go on the dating game.
What crime is he charged with? I don’t know of specific grooming laws, especially with regard to an 18 year old. Isn’t the age of consent in the U.K.?
If he broke the school’s policy, isn’t that a civil matter? Of course, I’d be upset if I was the parents. I just don’t know if there is a law in any country with regard to grooming. And I checked, the age of consent is 16.
This story happened in England and I don’t know what the “age of consent” is there.
I can’t tell that he was charged with anything only that he was kicked out of the school and can’t teach there anymore.
With these English people it’s hard to understand.
What does “struck off” mean?
In this context, it means fired.
Fired, though the term “struck off” generally pertains to members of a profession. Their names are struck off, or removed from, the list of those permitted to practice that profession.
English English for being removed from an official list — in this case presumably the list of licensed teachers.
“Ten months after the end of war, HMS Vainglorious was struck off the effective list, and sold for scrap by the Royal Navy.”
“What does “struck off” mean?”
I was hoping someone here knew, I don’t know the King’s English.
