LGBTQ-friendly votes signal progressive shift for Methodists

The United Methodist Church moved toward becoming more progressive and LGBTQ-affirming during U.S. regional meetings this month that included the election of its second openly gay bishop. Conservatives say the developments will only accelerate their exit from one of the nation’s largest Protestant denominations.

Each of the UMC’s five U.S. jurisdictions — meeting separately in early November — approved similarly worded measures aspiring to a future of church where “LGBTQIA+ people will be protected, affirmed, and empowered.”

They also passed non-binding measures asking anyone to withdraw from leadership roles if they’re planning to leave the denomination soon — a category that almost entirely includes conservatives moving toward the exits.

The denomination still officially bans same-sex marriage and the ordination of any “self-avowed, practicing homosexual,” and only a legislative gathering called the General Conference can change that.

It does seem, again, to basically be white people taking “Christianity” to the extreme. This is what I think of all liberals. They despise Christians but in truth are applying simple Christian principles without using context. Some of them actually ARE a in churches so it has spread like poison.

This is true of ALL churches, definitely Protestant churches. I can’t trust any of them.

Some of the less mainstream also seem to toy with apostate.

Excellent point.

It is ALL sin, and we better emphasize that.

I mean society at large.

Because honestly, the sexual obsession sin started long before the Gay Nineties. Enabled mostly by the Pill, then abortion, and then much better OTHER BC items.

We have no one to blame but ourselves, the heterosexual sinners who went hedonistic and said “do whatever makes you feel good”.

I had the impression the United Methodist Church was already all the way there. But I must admit that is from only a few data points in my immediate vicinity.

I retired at 85, 5 years ago, and sick about the fall of Methodism. John Wesley must be turning over in his grave.

Penicillin was the first cure for some STD’s. As a kid in the 80’s, when AIDS came along, I remember being horrified at the thought that you could die from catching something from sex....but that used to be the norm.

Yes the orthodox church is good too.

Yes there are good clerics/nuns still in the church. Unfortunately this horrible pope is on the side of the not so good clerics. I go to what is called a Traditine mass parish. Masa is said in latin like it was before the 60s. Very conservative, very loyal to the official church teaching. These parishes are thrivibg, the one seminary that produces the priests that can do these masses is full. Lots of young couples with a lot of children at my location. Of course the pope thinks this is a threat and has been clamping down on it. Disgusting.

Christ never said have sex with everyone. Only perverts reinterpret holy scripture toward their sin.
