I just realized the Marine standing to the president’s right in that photo is Corps Commandant David Shoup, member of Kennedy’s JCS and himself a Medal of Honor recipient (for actions at the Battle for Tarawa).

Which begs the question, whose Medal of Honor salutes whose?

The 27th was 90 day men getting ready to go home when the panic from Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania hit. The 27th was asked to serve longer and one of the inducements was a Medal of Honor for everyone. Eventually the medals were revoked.
