Ten people were reported to have been washed away by flood waters, Ontario Fire Department Chief Ray Gayk told KTLA.

Five people have been rescued and one man was confirmed dead, leaving authorities to search for up to four others. Two of them were seen in the water — though authorities are still searching for them — and two additional people were also seen in the water, but it is unknown if they escaped on their own or are dead in the basin.

They were previously described as being homeless and living in the area when the basin swelled with rain water during a powerful storm that slammed Southern California.

Fire officials are now focusing on finding two to four people believed to still be in the basin...

“They were previously described as being homeless and living in the area when the basin swelled with rain water during a powerful storm that slammed Southern California.”

I was wondering what they were doing in the wash.

That explained it.

When I was a kid I had a cousin who lived in Ontario, CA, and when we visited we would ride our bikes inside those storm basins and the aqueduct tunnels. I was in constant fear (even when it wasn’t raining) that we would get washed away.

Is this in Canada or the USA?

“Is this in Canada or the USA?”

Yeah, CA is used as a digraph for both. But since it’s KTLA I think it might be California.

Seems like every monsoon season in Albuquerque some homeless dude surfs an abandoned box spring to his doom. Moving water always wins.

Those channels go all the way up to Mt. Baldy Dam and the water can really get moving.

We used to skateboard in the 16’ pipe at the base of Baldy dam. Best skatepark the Army Corps ever built.

If this was Ontario Canada, I can think of a certain middle school Shop Teacher who would never need to worry about sinking.

...the basin swelled with rain water during a powerful storm that slammed Southern California.

A clue from the excerpt.

The “(CA)” in the thread title was enough for me .

Ontario California.

30 miles west of Los Angeles.

At the base of the San Gabriel mountains.

When it rains it pours and the numerous washes coming down from the mountains fill up and run fast.

Me too, plus the fact that Ontario, Canada is a province and doesn’t have just a single fire department.

From what I’ve seen (I walk my dogs along a wash in So Cal) - the homeless are cleared out - sometimes - but continue to return quickly to areas that are well known for flash flooding.

As a native, I know these washes are very unpredictable and dangerous during heavy rains. We had videos we showed to kids in the schools to stay away from rivers, streams, ect. b/c they can be deadly.

I too received repeated warnings yesterday to stay off the roads during the heavy rains.
