To: Osage Orange

Every time I see your user name, I smile.

We call them “Hedge apples” here and they’re how we know summer is done.

The hedge apples are lying everywhere along the roads right now, as farmers used to plant them as “living fences” for livestock.

The Osage Orange has many names...

hedge, hedge-apple, bodark, bois-d’arc, bowwood, naranjo chino, horse-apple, bow wood, hedge ball, maclura, mock orange, Osage orange, Osage-apple, tennis ball tree, bodock, fence shrub, hedge-orange, postwood...

Yep some of the best fence posts you could dig..that might last for 50 years..or more.
