Read what I just posted in comment # 40, it was a HUGE deal, and it is why he was so great.

I’ll let you argue with the experts.

It’s such a shame. We know a lot more about managing even severe laminitis and equine metabolic disorders than we did back then. He could have recovered today.

"I watched all three races."

So did I. The most memorable sporting events in my lifetime.

It may be, but is really immaterial to whether Sec was the greatest.

Also heard Sham had an 18-lb heart.

Again, these were when they died.

I’d just like to know how many 3yo he cut open, racing TBs.

As for Nack, lackey schoolgirl for Sec. He lied about the lip abscess and made it something it wasn’t. I don’t trust that “beloved journalist”.

Every horse should live to be 30.

Is there some genetic component to laminitis? I know about the risk when other issues have to be fought (Barbaro), but I don’t think Secretariat had any problem he was facing besides the laminitis.

It has been kind of backward.

But I just saw indeed my eyes did not deceive in that turf race. A horse pulled up injured. Hope he is ok.

Yes, there is plenty of arguments, but in the end Secretariat supporters can say look at the scoreboard, Triple Crown Winner in 1973 and holds the race record in all 3 races, won the Belmont by 31 lengths, other horses have had great careers but IMO no horse compares to that.

I forgot the shoe was still active then. They went to him after the Belmont disaster. I also forgot about the safety pin issue that as much as the jockey probably led to his Belmont loss. The bid was 2 3 and 4 yo champion. Quite a horse. Will epicenter take out flight. If not that one none will. 20 minutes to post.

Ruffian was special “she” was undefeated and won pretty easily, no less than 2.75 length and often over 10. Such a shame breaking down in her match race. I shed a tear that day.

Stated elsewhere, the TC (esp. the KY Derby) is overstated in importance, esp. since it is restricted to 3yo and it is on the early side of their maturity.

There are many more markers to look at, not just margins and time records and what exact race it was.

Just as today, I’m still not comparing Flightline to Ghostzapper, and not Secretariat either.

Still not Ghostzapper’s track or stake record. 2:00 and change.

Not convinced yet! Promising, but race some more and see how you do in the mud and with better fields and weight.

huh??...better fields??...weight??...he just walked away from the Kentucky Derby winner...the Travers winner carrying 126 pounds...and broke American Pharoahs margin of victory...in 2:00 even while being wrapped up ....and hes done that in EVERY race hes been in....horse is a freak...

I could not find the weights he carried prior…much less compared to the rest of the fields.

I don’t pay much attention since they all betrayed us with BLM Wokeness, but I recall RS as being a long shot (not unusual in the Derby), and again you mention 2 3yos. How are the rest? They seemed respectable, just not knockouts. Also wondering where the foreigners are? Though they shouldn’t be in dirt races.

Margins are great, but they need to be matched by times. This one may be a good Beyer.

Cool but not seeing him topple GZ. Too few races (they said that for GZ but now everyone is flipping out over FL?), no mud, no variance in style.
