I thought freegans were the dumpster diver folks. They can find some really good stuff that gets tossed out because of a date but are sfill edible. If I was in hard times I’d dumpster dive at good supermarkets for dam sure, for some food items.
I did as well. I guess by the time a cliché gets all the way around to Australia, the meaning migrates also.
There is a point to some of the "sustainable" weenies' madness. To the extent possible, it's better for one's health to eat foods grown locally and in season, so that the local allergens would already have been processed by the bees, and the God-given ripe and fresh qualities that align with our created bodies are at their peak. There's also benefits in supporting local growers and reducing transport, freezing, packaging, and all the stuff we pay for at the big groceries in addition to the food.
Farmers' prices may seem the same as the big grocers', but chain stores' margin is made up by squeezing the farmers, added chemicals and preservatives, energy costs for processing and storing, shrinkage (theft), spoilage, trash hauling of stuff that could be compost or could be eaten by the homeless, advertising, and so on.
