From his bio (the Ashlee Vance one), he appears to be a very typical tinkerer/nerd that we all knew growing up. Where many young nerds are bookworms, he was both a bookworm and an engineer-type tinkerer.

The one thing that separates Musk from a lot of other such nerds is that he seems able to grow from his many mistakes.

Another thing about Musk is that he seems compulsive about staying realistic while also letting his mind wander to all the possibilities.
