I have a stuffed dog I’ve had since 1969, known as “New Dog” because it was given to my older brother to replace a lost “Old Dog,” but he didn’t accept the substitution. And I have the stuffed cat my father had in the nursing home before he died: “Dad’s Kitty.”

I’ll take Dad’s Kitty on visits to my mom, but I take New Dog on campouts.
