Ah yes, Bruce Springsteen.

As a youngster I would hear his music, so apocalyptic and negative. Coming from over 1,000 miles to the southwest of New Jersey I envisioned a devastated landscape in the Northeast.

It just had to be like Berlin or Stalingrad after WWII. So horrible for the people, they were probably freezing and starving I thought.

At the age of 19 I finally took a trip from Virginia north to New Hampshire.

The buildings were intact. People were going to work. People were going to school. People were going to concerts in the park.

Where was the devastation?

Compared to Mississippi and Arkansas it was a LOT wealthier. Why all the complaining?

People who are poor are usually busy working to get unpoor. It takes a certain amount of luxury to have time to write songs bemoaning your plight.
