I’m sure I’m not the only one who was surprised by friends suddenly consumed by hate and fear and spewing hateful vitriol based entirely on MSM propaganda driven fear.

That’s a great observation, Chuckster. I was less surprised by the hate and fear than I was by which of my friends and acquaintances were spewing it. If I had to choose people in advance who I thought would have been hateful toward me, some of them would have been the people who turned out to be pretty reasonable. I would never have chosen the two who turned out to be the most hateful and dictatorial. That saddened me on multiple levels.
The first was that I didn’t know these people as well as I thought I did. The second was that they were conservative Catholics who regularly preached tolerance and kindness towards all. The third was that I believed them to be well-informed people with more knowledge and a deeper understanding of how the world really works. They turned out to be the best promoters of the mandates and lockdowns and would hear no other points of view. Their complete endorsement of the ways New York State and Canada were handling covid knocked me on my behind.
When we’re all able to cross borders freely and associate as we did in February 2020, my circle is going to look different than it did three years ago, barring meaningful damage repair by the worst of them.
