LOL! I live in the suburbs of a large midwestern city. Had a black bear a couple hundred yards from my house walking by. Could be a threat to foolish people trying to take a picture or children. It eventually just climbed a tree and got removed by animal control if I remember correctly.
My last encounter with a bear in the wild was many years ago, backpacking with a couple of friends in Yosemite National Park. We hiked down from White Wolf to Pate Valley and had just fixed dinner when a bear showed up—didn’t bother us but was interested in what we might have in our backpacks. During the night bears destroyed most of our food—there weren’t many places to hang it out of their reach (most of the trees in the area had lost their lower branches, probably from other people trying to hang their food from them). So what was meant to be an 8-day hike turned into a 3-day hike.
