If I could be transported back to say 1955, I would be pretty happy because then I'd be dead before we came to these current times.
I first heard “Surf City” when I was staying in a hotel in San Francisco in the last week of June 1963—a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, when The City had a Republican mayor (and LA had a Democratic mayor who was more conservative than most Republicans).
Lately my Mom and I have been watching old Elvis movies on Friday nights. The movies themselves were so-so, but they did show an America that was a 100x nicer place to live - from coast to coast.
Lately, I’ve been listening to sound checks back from the late 60s from KHJ in Los Angeles, the radio station featured in the movie ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, complete with DJ banter and commercials, I put it on at night to go to sleep, and it takes me back to my childhood.
I was around in 1955 and things were far different than you think they were.
It was SOooooo much better than you can even imagine. So much freedom and safety. Sure there were problems but nothing compared to today. Gas was 20 cents for 100 octane, quarters and dimes were silver, paper dollars were redeemable in silver, most places didn’t have sales tax, Moms were home while Dad worked and kids were free to roam as long as they were home for dinner and came when Mom called. The good list just goes on and on.
