Inmate Benjamin Cole was executed by the state of Oklahoma Thursday morning for the 2002 killing of his 9-month-old daughter.
He was pronounced dead at 10.22am Central Time.
The 57-year-old died by lethal injection.
His attorneys had previously argued that Cole was mentally ill and not competent to be executed.
Cole was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and, according to his attorneys, is 'incapacitated by his mental illness to the point of being essentially non-functional.'
Attorneys for the state and members of the victim's family, however, have said that symptoms of Cole's mental illness are exaggerated and that the brutality of his daughter's killing merited the death penalty.
Five days before Christmas in 2002, Brianna Cole was murdered by her father, who forcibly bent the infant backwards until her spine broke and her aorta tore. Prosecutors said Cole was angry that her cries were interrupting his video game playing.
Cole's was the sixth execution carried out in Oklahoma since October 2021 when the state recommenced the practice.

Is a sentence carried out 20 years after the crime really “justice?” why did it take so long?

All murderers have mental issues, just some have it worse than others. ALL should get the death penalty in circumstances like this.
The law grifters needed to milk him for all the taxpayer dollars they could.

Twenty years on death row is ridiculous. I realize it’s the norm, but it should not be so. Give the perp a chance to appeal. Then fry him. Endless stays and appeals like this are not productive.
Did they execute him the same way he killed his precious daughter? And no prayers here for God to have mercy. My prayer would for God to be just with this guy.

I wonder if he was that mentally in why did the family allow him around the baby in the first place? what is wrong with people?
They know a relative is off their rocker then when the worst happens they blame the mentally ill person? How about not letting these nutty people around babies in the first place!

He was smart enough to know this action would murder his child... and if asked he would know murdering a child is wrong. There are LOTS Of mentally ill humans who don't murder their children - glad to see the jury didn't buy his 'excuse'...
