The family of a man fatally shot by police nearly a year ago has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department.
They say 22-year-old Margarito Lopez was suffering a mental health crisis and that not calling a crisis team during the initial response was a mistake.
Family members said they called police for help the evening of Dec. 18, believing Lopez was suicidal. He hadn’t committed a crime or hurt anyone.
When officers arrived, however, Lopez was armed with a knife. Police can be heard on body cam video telling Lopez to drop the knife and using less-than-lethal rounds. Police ultimately shot Lopez to death during the encounter.
Attorney Luis Carillo said Tuesday that officers overreacted and should have called a mental crisis team to the scene.

Just let them stab you. No problem..
That sounds so innocent and civil..I prefer realistic descriptions like, raging violent lunatic with a knife.
When in close proximity... a crazy man with a knife is every bit as dangerous as a crazy man with a handgun.
Sounds like a pretty smart family, able to kill 2 birds with one stone.
Eliminate the family whack job and get millions for doing it. Not bad. Hats off.
FReepers- look up the Tueller Drill: A knife wielding suspect 21 feet away can lunge and stab or kill you even if your firearm is at high ready.
Other comments: Lotsa yelling by multiple cops; no attempt at de-escalation or one one one communication by a calm and collected officer. Bolo wraps or a Force Science course - huh, what’s that? No deployment of long range less than lethal devices. Result? Big bucks payoff for nut boy’s family and lifelong mental second guessing for the cops who fired the shots.
