SEVEN BILLION have disappeared from the Bering Straits in the last four years - entire industry faces ruin The future of one of Discovery's biggest franchises, Deadliest Catch, is under threat following the cancelation of the 2022 snow crab fishing season

Fishermen and their families were dealt devastating blow last week when the local government canceled the season for the first time in Alaska's history

The industry regularly brings in $200 million per year The decision came after billions of snow crabs vanished from the Bering Sea-area over the last 12 months Restaurant owners across the country are gearing up for shortages and price increases as Alaska produces 60 percent of the seafood consumed in the US

Last year, which was considered a slow year, the fleet in the Bering Sea caught $132 million worth of snow crabs One trawlerman said that the cancelation would be 'life changing' and possibly 'career ending'

The future of one of the Discovery Channel's most successful franchises is under severe threat following the news that Alaska's lucrative snow crab fishing season has been canceled.

Deadliest Catch has aired on the network since April 2005 and made stars of veteran sea captains such as Sig Hansen, Keith Colburn and Bill Wichrowski. Its 18th season is currently airing.

Speaking to KING5, Bri Dwyer, the wife of one of the star's Deadliest Catch, said that the fishermen found out at the same time as everyone else that the season was canceled.

Bri Dwyer, wife of Sean Dwyer, said that the fishermen are allowed to catch, Bairdi, a specific type of snow crab.

She said: 'There's a small Bairdi season, a little over 2 million pounds and we need to see if it makes sense for our boats.'

My guess would be pollution from china. Amazing what is dumped in the water there. Tons of Mercury for one.
2nd guess would be chinese trawlers raking them up.

It could be predators, like orcas. If you have an oversupply of prey, the population of predators will grow until they start to eat themselves out of house and home.

That’s how predator pits form and work.

FWIW——

What eats Snow crabs in Alaska?
Seals, sea otters, octopi, other crabs, and a wide variety of fish prey on Alaska snow crabs. Alaska snow crabs are found off the coast of Alaska in the Bering, Beaufort, and Chukchi Seas. , and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game manage the Alaska snow crab fishery.

“Alaska Department of Fish and Game manage the Alaska snow crab fishery.”

“Put the government (any government) in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there will be a shortage of sand.”
Probably applies to snow crabs as well.

The Chinese are destroying our oceans.

I’m almost 50. Glad I won’t be around 50 years from now to see what this place looks like then.

The Smallest Catch: Mystery of the disappearing Alaskan snow crabs deepens

Mystery? US has cancelled its King crab season for the second year in a row, meanwhile the Russians have increased their King crab quota.

Soros? areas are exclusive?

Last I heard, across the Bearing Straight, Russia will arrest Soros if he comes to their sphere of control.

I doubt the Russians would spare Soros because of his age.

The other option is they migrated outside of the usual fishing grounds. It has happened before, maybe not at this level but it has happened. With costs of fuel and parts these days, it might not be worth the expense to go after them and the whackos are claiming global warming or whatever to beat down the industry.

I blame birth control pills being flushed down the toilet and the hormones contained in them getting out into the environment.

Global warming has nothing to do with it.

Walked by the seafood isle in the grocery store yesterday.
King crab: $59.49 lbs.
Didn’t see the snow crab. I’m sure it’s in the same range.
