With cell phones make sure to record an inspection with the agent as the star role. Make them acknowledge every scratch and dent and film the miles.

However... I usually find the cheapest place with pre busted up cars from Arabs or Iranians. They don’t care about the cars and cash is king. The ONLY time I use Hertz or Avis is when a company pays for it. Otherwise they are a huge ripoff.

124 dollar cleaning fee from Hertz. I had leaves on my feet on the floor matt. They found dog hairs in the back of the hatchback. My dog was not in the car and to the best of my knowledge my wife has no canine hair nor do I make her ride in the back of the hatchback.

They are thieves. When I picked up the car there was no pre inspection in my presence when I returned the car was no post inspection in my presence.

Herzt is a thief.

Thanks for the report. I’ve never used Uber/Lyft but will give them a try.

I'm a bit of an oldster so I resisted the whole Uber/Lyft thing for years, thinking it was a millennial hipster thing. But the rental car experience got less and less satisfying so thought I'd give them a try.

It takes about five minutes to setup the app and you are off and running. Loading the method of payment was really the most difficult part of it as I had to dig a credit card out of my wallet.

Once loaded you simply type in where you want to go. Don't even need an address. Just the first few letters of the name of the restaurant, hotel, etc., and it pops right up with all the options and prices.

Once you select a car, you can see exactly where the car is on a map with the driver's name, picture, make of car and license plate number. You get a vibration when it's three minutes away.

It wasn't just millennials that were driving either. I met a 20 year Navy Vet and also a couple of older people, who do it as a side gig in retirement. All of them very polite and eager to make recommendations. They live and die on the reviews you give them so they tend to be super nice and helpful. Exactly the opposite of most cab drivers you will run into.
