As a teen in Dayton,OH, we had band just up the road called The McCoys fronted by their guitarist/vocalist, Rick Zehringer. Their biggest hit was "Hang On Sloopy".
At a teen club, they were the opening act for Simon&Garfunkel's PSRT tour and stayed on stage to be their backing band. Certainly the technical chops of Zehringer was easily heard - quite impressive!
Eventually, RZ left his group, went to LA and quickly earned a reputation as a top notch studio musician.
Rick changed his last name to Derringer and the rest is history including gigs with Fagen/Becker (aka Steely Dan) playing that hot slide on "Show Biz Kids" and lead solo on "Chain Lightning". IIRC, he also played on SD's "Gaucho" album,
