I remember bring somewhere in the middle of the National Mall about six blocks from the U.S Capitol in the ‘80s. It was a cool, damp, rainy weekday afternoon in April, with thick and heavy air. There were few people out that day, and several enormous speaker towers were being set up around 3rd Street. I don’t remember what event they were preparing for, it might have been Earth Day. Suddenly, from everywhere and nowhere in particular music enveloped me. The loud notes and rhythm just made the thick air vibrate: “Don’t you forget about me —hey, hey hey …. “ It was so beautiful I still remember every note clearly, even though I forget the details of what I was doing there or what year it was. Then, after a minute or two transfixed, the music stopped, and I heard “Simple Minds, sound check”.
