The thing was the size of a pickup truck. It reeked of decomposing mammal, and it was covered in what appeared to be long, white hair.

That’s one of the problems in living close to the ocean. I don’t remember anything like that being washed up in Nebraska.

Creatures can look a lot different after death, as other creatures feed on them, and their bodies break down. What was once a whale, can look more like a large jelly fish. LOL. Just about every “strange unknown dead ocean creature” story I see usually turns out to be a known creature that’s shape was changed due to decomposition and the carcass being fed upon by other ocean creatures.
