I read that “The Trolley Song” was written as filler, as the producer, Arthur Freed thought the story too slow at that point, and didn’t want a love song.

So he told the song-writer to write a song about the trolley, and thinking it a farce, Hugh Martin wrote a song with trolley sounds.
